How Artists Can Leverage Bots In 2017

We’ve seen a few artists adopt the technology early, and they’re smart for doing so.

Hardwell, a multi-award winning Dj, released his own Messenger bot this past summer. It was a “world first” fan experience in dance music, and a great example of how artists can easily use the platform while experimenting with new ways to connect with fans. You can check out the bot here, but here’s a breakdown of the few things it does:

  1. Notifies fans of new songs and videos — and NOT in spammy way.

These are all simple functions, but it’s a new way 900 million fans around the world can interact with him. What’s more important is that he’s testing the waters with this new channel and figuring out what the best experience looks like. This early testing is what I believe every artist should be doing as the new year rolls out.

Here are a few other ideas I had that could be worth experimenting with.

Tour Announcements

Right now, fans would probably find out that their favorite artist is touring through a social media post. There’d be an image or a link that informs them when they’ll be coming to a city near them. Assuming the user has already shared their location with the bot, this announcement could be much more effective if delivered as a personalized message.

Fan Conversation

Sure, this is something that can be done on Reddit or Twitter. But there’s nothing like having a one-on-one interaction with your favorite artist. I would imagine this being achieved by letting fans know that if they interact with the bot within a time window, they have a chance at a short conversation with the artist. This could pave the way for more meaningful connections with fans.

Giveaways

Holding themed contests with an exclusive giveaway is nothing new. Why not promote these on Messenger? I imagine it’d be easier for fans to share content directly with the artist via conversation than by posting it on their own accounts and tagging. And because we spend more time on messenger apps anyways, I believe there are higher chances for engagement.
